报告人简介：李励博士是美国Cirrus制药公司和American制药公司的创始人和研发总监，1982年毕业于清华大学化工系，是密执根大学的化学博士和北卡罗来大学的MBA。创业前，先后担任葛兰素和先灵制药公司的资深科学家，在药物制剂，给药方式和呼吸道药物的开发上有重大的科技成果。

Observing Black Holes: Probing the Limits of General Relativity

Over the past fifteen years, dozens of celestial objects have been positively identified as black holes.  These objects represent the most extreme manifestations of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. In this talk, I will describe the observational signatures that allow us to identify these enigmatic objects, and the ways they are now being used to explore new frontiers in General Relativity.

主讲人介绍：

Charles Bailyn is the Thomas E. Donnelley Professor of Astronomy and Physics at Yale University, and served as Chair of the Astronomy Department from 1999-2005.  He was an undergraduate at Yale (class of 1981) and did graduate work at Cambridge and Harvard University, receiving his PhD from Harvard in 1987. His PhD thesis on X-ray emitting binary stars received the Trumpler award for best North American PhD thesis in astronomy.  After three years as a member of Harvard's Society of Fellows, he returned to Yale as a faculty member in 1990, and has been there ever since.  He is the author of over one hundred scientific papers relating to the observational study of black holes and related sources of X-rays, and to dense star clusters and the consequences of collisions between stars.  Prof. Bailyn has carried out research with a wide variety of ground and space-based telescopes, and currently serves as the Principal Scientist of the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS) which operates four telescopes in Chile, and as President of the WIYN Corporation, which operates two telescopes in Arizona.  In addition to his research work, Prof. Bailyn has developed innovative teaching methods in science courses for non-scientists, and has recently led a re-examination of all of Yale's courses of this kind.  He has been awarded the Dylan Hixon Prize, Yale's highest honor for teaching excellence in the natural sciences.
